Film Independent Spirit Awards: 2012 Winners

The Artist dominates yet another awards programme

As expected, "The Artist" dominated Saturday's Independent Spirit Awards, winning four awards for best feature, director, actor and cinematography. The drama was getting "The Artist" creative team via police escort to the event from a delayed flight from Paris, where the film won six Cesars. "The Artist" actress Penelope Ann Miller accepted for cinematographer Guillaume Schiffman and best actor Jean Dujardin, who lost the Cesar in Paris, while Michel Hazanavicius arrived five minutes before he won best director. At that point Harvey Weinstein could enjoy his wins. Having won the Cesars, BAFTAs, Golden Globes and Broadcast Film Critics Awards, the Oscars Sunday is "The Artist"'s to lose.

As usual, the Oscar nominees among the Spirits tended to win, from Michelle Williams ("My Week with Marilyn") and Alexander Payne, Jim Rash and Nat Faxon for best screenplay for "The Descendants" to expected Oscar winners "A Separation" (best international film) and supporting actor Christopher Plummer ("Beginners"). In the supporting actress category, however, Shailene Woodley who did not land a nomination for "The Descendants" beat Oscar nominee Janey McTeer ("Albert Nobbs").
