The New Zealand International Film Festival revealed 18 films that will be screening direct from Cannes in its 2013 programme.
From the Cannes In Competition section the NZIFF has secured the controversial Mexican winner of the Best Director Award, Heli; winner of Best Screenplay, A Touch of Sin, from China; Like Father, Like Son, winner of the Jury Prize; and The Past by Asghar Fahardi which won the award for Best Actress. From the same category are also two outstanding crowd pleasers, The Great Beauty by Paolo Sorrentino, and Steven Soderbergh’s Behind the Candelabra starring Michael Douglas and Matt Damon.
From Un Certain Regard, a section that supplements the competition selection, comes Omar, the winner of the Special Jury Prize. Other titles selected from this section are The Bling Ring by Sofia Coppola, Kurdish Western My Sweet Pepper Land, The Missing Picture from Cambodia, slow cinema title Norte, the End of History from the Philippines, and Stranger by the Lake from France.
From the Directors’ Fortnight Section the NZIFF has secured Ilo Ilo, winner of Camera d’Or for Best First Film, Alejandro Jodorowsky’s The Dance of Reality, and Clio Barnard’s The Selfish Giant.
From the Cannes Classics section comes the only New Zealand showing of the 1971 Roman Polanski-produced portrait of F1 legend Jackie Stewart, Weekend of a Champion, and Indian classic Charulata. Monsoon Shootout will screen straight from the Midnight Screenings at Cannes section.
“To have another year of strong programming direct from Cannes is great news for NZIFF. New Zealand audiences will have the opportunity to view these films weeks and even months ahead of other audiences outside of France.” says NZIFF Director Bill Gosden.
All films are confirmed to screen in Auckland and Wellington, with the exception of Weekend of a Champion, The Dance of Reality and Monsoon Shootout, which are Auckland-only screenings. Further region listings will be advised once print availability and distributor arrangements are confirmed as the Festival travels around New Zealand.
NZIFF programmes will be available in Auckland from Tuesday 25 June and in Wellington from Friday 28 June. NZIFF in Auckland screens from 18 July to 4 August, and in Wellington from 26 July to 11 August.
